Mentre il 1963 apparteneva al boom del beat guidato dal Merseyside, l’anno successivo vide l’emergere dell’R&B nostrano: i leader del mercato The Rolling Stones furono raggiunti sul delta del Tamigi da una schiera di altrettanto giovani, grezzi ed entusiasti seguaci del blues britannico. The Pretty Things, The Yardbirds e Manfred Mann sarebbero saliti alla ribalta nazionale, ma molti altri aspiranti king bees – The Artwoods, Downliners Sect, i primi The Birds di Ronnie Wood – avrebbero dovuto accontentarsi di un pubblico più locale. Tra gli altri eroi in difficoltà che cercavano di pagare l’affitto c’erano gli Who (come The High Numbers), Steve Marriott (come leader dei The Moments) e Rod “The Mod” Stewart (con gli Hoochie Coochie Men), che diedero tutti un primo avviso del loro talento in via di sviluppo a un mondo indifferente.
