John Cage’s Four6 is one of his “number pieces”: the sixth (6) written for four players (Four), or, rather, for four means of sound production. The instructions found in his “score” specify very little of the work’s final aural appearance, but very much in terms of how the artists should proceed. His instructions are assumed by Sergio Armaroli not only as the starting point of his performance/rendition of Cage’s Four6, but also as an inspiration for further, original pieces which adopt a similar stance but reshape it according to Armaroli’s own creativity. “In the Garden”, the variant recorded here, is particularly significant in its fascinating use of natural sounds.
