L’album “Benny a Bruxelles” (Columbia C2L 16, originariamente pubblicato su due LP separati, CL1247 e CL1248) è stato registrato durante la Brussels World Fair del 1958, tra il 25 e il 31 Maggio. Benny Goodman è venuto in Europa molte volte nel corso della sua carriera, ricevendo sempre un’accoglienza entusiasta. Una delle sue incursioni più nota nel Vecchio Continente è stata la sua partecipazione alla sezione americana della World Fair di Bruxelles del 1958. In quell’occasione Goodman era accompagnato dalla sua big band (ma ha anche suonato alcune canzoni con formazioni più ristrette), alla quale si era unito come ospite speciale il celebre cantante Jimmy Rushing. Come indicato nelle note di copertina originali, la band fu accolta molto bene dal pubblico europeo. Il successo travolgente del gruppo portò la Columbia ad acquisire una parte delle registrazioni effettuate nell’occasione dalla Westinghouse Broadcasting Company per poi pubblicarle in due diversi album intitolati Benny a Bruxelles Vol.1 e Vol. 2. Su questo triplo cd sono presentati sono solo i due album originali, ma ogni altra registrazione conservata di quella settimana di concerti. Oltre a Benny Goodman, spiccano in queste registrazioni Jimmy Rushing, Zoot Sims, Taft Jordan e il pianista Roland Hanna (che era ancora sconosciuto all’epoca).
