Presented here is the classic 1956 Billie Holiday album Lady Sings the Blues (Clef Records MG C-721), which features the singer backed by such stars as Charlie Shavers, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Tony Scott, and Paul Quinichette, plus three tracks that complete the 1954 session from which the second part of the LP was taken. The album contains versions of the classics “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child,” as well as the title song, composed by Herbie Nichols, which would also provide the title for Holiday’s autobiography, published in 1956 along with the appearance of the album. A 1955 date has also been added, which presents a similar front line to the first session from Lady Sings the Blues, with Charlie Shavers and Tony Scott.
