Keef Hartley è salito alla ribalta come membro del gruppo R&B britannico The Artwoods, prima di unirsi ai Bluesbreakers di John Mayall nel 1967, per poi formare la prima formazione della sua band. Con Miller Anderson (chitarra, voce), Gary Thain (basso), Peter Dines (tastiere), Spit James (chitarra) e una sezione fiati che era un “who’s who” del JAZZ britannico (Henry Lowther, Chris Mercer, Lyn Dobson e Harry Beckett), Hartley registrò il suo primo album per l’etichetta Deram di Decca nel marzo 1969. Oggi considerato un classico del genere, “Halfbreed” è un ottimo esempio della fusione di ROCK, JAZZ e BLUES che diventerà il modello della Keef Hartley Band.
