James Andrew Rushing, meglio noto come Jimmy Rushing, è nato in Oklahoma il 26 Agosto 1901. Conosciuto anche come “Mr. Five by Five” (soprannome che si riferiva alla sua stazza) Rushing è stato uno dei più noti cantanti blues e jazz del suo tempo e ha partecipato a più di 250 sessioni in studio e registrazioni dal vivo tra il 1929 e il 1971. L’album “Rushing Lullabies” presenta Mr. Five by Five in un contesto familiare, circondato prevalentemente da vecchi colleghi ed ex-membri dell’orchestra di Count Basie (Buddy Tate, Sir Charles Thompson, Ray Bryant e Jo Jones) di cui Rushing aveva fatto parte dal 1935 al 1948. Il secondo album proposto in questa pubblicazione, “Brubeck e Rushing”, è invece un esperimento musicale unico che vede Rushing affiancato dal Dave Brubeck Quartet (con Paul Desmond, Gene Wright e Joe Morello).
