Dopo che Ella Fitzgerald sciolse la sua orchestra nel 1941, fu libera di registrare per Decca in una varietà di contesti musicali. Questo doppio cd presenta l’album originale “The First Lady of Song” (Decca DL-8695), insieme a tutte le altre tracce delle stesse sessioni e diverse altre rare registrazioni dello stesso periodo. Tutte le tracce vedono la cantante accompagnata da varie orchestre e gruppi strumentali. Tra i tanti punti salienti ci sono le sue prime interpretazioni di grandi successi come “Mr. Paganini”, “My One and Only Love”, “The Tender Trap”, “I’ve got the World on a String” e “Angel Eyes”.
