Nato a Pittsburgh, in Pennsylvania, la cantante Dakota Staton ha frequentato la famosa George Westinghouse High School, prima di entrare nella scena musicale locale. Fin da giovane iniziò a viaggiare per esibirsi nei locali notturni di Detroit, Indianapolis, Cleveland, St. Louis e New York, dove fu scoperta dal produttore della Capitol Records Dave Cavanaugh che la mise sotto contratto e la portò al successo.
